• Summer heat and humidity, and hurricane season — worth planning for, not fearing.
• Healthcare. Southeast Georgia Health System is in Brunswick; specialists sometimes mean a drive to Savannah or Jacksonville.
• Cost. Island property carries an island premium. Nearby Brunswick and the mainland offer more home for the money.

The bottom line

For many retirees, St. Simons hits a sweet spot: coastal beauty, a warm community, and easy access to bigger cities when you want them. The key is matching the right neighborhood — island, mainland, or a new-construction community — to how you actually want to live.
